Top 10 Best Touring Bikes Reviews

01 Salsa Marrakesh Alivio

Salsa Marrakesh Alivio

Why It Stands Out to Us

If you’re looking for a durable and affordable mid-tier touring bike, the Salsa Marrakesh Alivio won’t disappoint you. The heavy-duty steel frame, outstanding riding geometry, and large loading capacity make the bike one of the first choices for many serious cross-country bikers.

With the help of a 27-speed adjustable drivetrain, the bike gave us the ability to fine-tune the bike according to our needs. Although the bike is a little heavy, we’ve found absolutely no issues with comfort and control.

The tubeless-ready and super grippy tires can hold their ground on even the most slippery terrains. High-powered disc brakes provided enough stopping power on all kinds of surfaces.

For those who are searching for a quality touring bike for their next adventures, the Salsa Marrakesh Alivio is the perfect low-maintenance, high-performance touring bike you can depend on!

Our Experience With The Salsa Marrakesh Alivio

Frame Geometry

The frame geometry is the biggest concern for riders when it comes to choosing a touring bike. Not only do touring bikes have to maintain a proper and comfortable seating position, but they also have to support a lot of weight on long trips.

The Salsa Marrakesh Alivio passed our expectations with flying colors. Marrakesh is a dedicated touring bike from Salsa, equipped with heavy-duty Triple-butted Chromoly steel capable of withstanding world tours.

For us, the combination of heavy-duty yet lightweight steel, a high-head tube, short chainstays, and a low bottom bracket provided an exceptionally stable ride.

However, the front end felt a little stretched out to some of our taller riders. If that’s your case, get a smaller frame size.

The frame is also designed to be able to handle heavier loads than other touring bikes. With all the fender mounts filled with cargo, my bike looked like a mini tank; but the ride was surprisingly smooth.

Drivetrain

Riding the Salsa Marrakesh Alivio felt amazing, thanks to its powerful, efficient, and affordable Shimano Alivio/Acera groupset. The setup includes a 27-speed rear cassette, giving us plenty of gears to choose from for going up/downhill or accelerating on flat terrain.

The drivetrain helps this bike to be very reliable and efficient in all kinds of terrain. Even after riding around 1000 miles, I’ve had no issues with the bike, which showcases its quality and durability.

The bike also features TRP Spyre-C mechanical disc brakes for superior stopping power. If you need more stopping power, installing a 180mm (max) rotor will help. However, the stock 160 mm rotor is enough to stop the bike even with around 95 lbs of extra load!

The 62mm trail on the front end provided additional stability and superior control, making the bike ideal for some serious touring. The chainstay was a bit longer for me, so I had to fine-tune the wheelbase for better handling.

Wheels

The Salsa Marrakesh Alivio comes equipped with WTB ST i19 TCS 2.0 rims and Teravail Rampart 700c x 42 mm tires. These tires are seriously grippy with low rolling resistance.

The rims are double-walled and the setup is tubeless-ready, making them very sturdy and reliable even on the bumpiest roads. They also feature eyelets for easy spoke replacement, should there ever be a need.

The stock tires provided enough grip on our tests, but there is also an option for installing tires up to 50mm. We rode this bike on almost every type of terrain possible with absolutely no issues.

Pro tip: Run your tires at lower air pressure over bumpy roads, gravel, or asphalt for a more comfortable ride.

Load carrying capacity

What we’ve found the most amazing about the loading capacity of this bike is its ability to allow us to bring a ton of stuff with us on our trips, without compromising the performance.

The Salsa Marrakesh Alivio is most probably the best touring bike available when it comes to loading capacity. It’s able to carry up to 93 lbs of extra cargo, 60 on the front and 33 on the rear.

We were able to carry all of our loads, including 3 water bottles on our cross-country bike trip. The rack and fender mounts are customizable, giving you the opportunity to distribute the load evenly across the bike.

Others

  • The kickstand and the leather saddle are really nice features to have on long trips
  • Multiple drivetrains allow superior control over the ride
  • High tire clearance provides a smoother ride in all types of terrain
  • This is a low-maintenance bike with easy repair options

What We Didn’t Like

    • The heavy steel frame came with a weight penalty, making the bike a bit heavy
    • Steel racks would be much better than the aluminum ones
  • The fender stays can interfere with the down-under rack

Who is it Great for

The Salsa Marrakesh Alivio is one of the best touring bikes for you if you:

  • Want to carry more loads in touring missions
  • Take part in long distance cycling regularly

02 Kona Sutra

Kona Sutra

Why It Stands Out to Us

The Sutra is famously known as a legendary touring workhorse. If you are looking for a stylish, affordable, versatile, and hyper-performing bike, The Kona Sutra is one of the best touring bikes you can get.

With a combination of durable parts, quality components, and a sleek design, this tourer grabbed our attention at the first sight. After riding around a thousand miles across the US, this is one of my favorite touring bikes of all time!

With a lower center of gravity and comfortable seating position, even the longest trip becomes much more enjoyable. From grass to gravel and even sand, the super grippy tire will make you feel that your bike is glued to the ground.

This bike performed better when loaded, but that doesn’t mean you can’t ride it without any load. From grocery shopping to cross-country trips, the Kona Sutra can handle almost anything you throw at it.

What stood out the most to us is the high-quality components, sleek frame design, and comfortable riding position. If you’re looking for a decent mid-tier touring bike within an affordable budget, this is one of the best options for you!

Our Experience With the Kona Sutra

Frame Geometry

With a durable Kona Cromoly steel frame, the Kona Sutra is ready to take on almost any kind of terrain with ease. The shock-absorbent steel frame provided a smooth ride and better riding geometry.

The steel frame is accompanied by steel Project Two forks disc brakes, bar end shifters, and necessary accessories like mudguards and racks.

A slightly upright seating position, coupled with a comfortable leather saddle (Brooks) helped lower our center of gravity for a relaxed riding experience.

The bike’s geometry also features a sloppy top tube and a high front end. I tested the 48 cm version and felt pretty good with the overall frame design.

The frame is sturdy, soaks up road vibrations well, and provides a comfortable ride even when fully loaded.

Drivetrain

The bike utilizes a Shimano Deore 3×10 drivetrain and bar-end shifters for a seamless riding experience. The transmission is capable enough to perform well over paved surfaces and light grovel. You’ll also be able to cruise around the town without any discomfort.

With the help of a simple friction lever (no indexing) on the front shifter, we were able to adjust the front derailleur’s (Shimano GRX 400) position.

However, the rear derailleur wasn’t secured enough and mine came loose after 6 months.

The bike also features a Shimano 9-speed cassette, FSA Omega crank arms, Shimano disk hubs, Avid BB7 disc brakes, and Tektro brake levers to offer a smooth ride with enough stopping power.

Wheels

The Kona Sutra uses Continental 700x32C tires and Alex XD-Lite rims. Although the tires are a little heavier compared to other touring bikes, we are satisfied with the performance.

In our opinion, 26” tires would be much better on the bike, because 700c (29”) tires can be hard to find in places outside the US, and you don’t want to end up with a broken bike, with no compatible parts available nearby.

With superior traction and grip, the tires felt like they were glued to the ground. Whether I was going up or downhill, it handled ascends and descends like a champ.

My bike had no issues even with a nearly 45-degree climb while loaded to the brim!

Performance

I’ve been riding the Kona Sutra for over a year now, and I have no major complaints. The bike is a perfect combination of road biking and mountain biking. It performs well on concrete, gravel, asphalt, grass, and even lightly sandy areas.

The bike can support a rider of up to 300 lbs, with additional 30 lbs of load capacity, enough to cover all of your essentials with room to spare.

The bike may seem a little heavy to many riders, and I’ve heard complaints about the brake position limiting the front rack mounting option, which was true.

The handlebar is placed somewhere between a comfortable, laid-back, and upright position and an aggressive riding style of urban bikes. As a result, the Kona Sutra provides a perfect balance of performance and comfort.

Others

  • The through-axle on the front wheels secures the wheel
  • The Brooks saddle becomes comfortable over time
  • The bike seems a little slower, maybe because of the weight penalty

What We Didn’t Like

  • The panniers are positioned higher on the front wheel
  • The rear derailleur’s position isn’t secure enough
  • The handlebar tape lost its quality quicker than we thought

Who is it Great for

The Kona Sutra is a great option for you if you:

  • Are looking for an affordable touring bike
  • Want a smooth riding experience regardless of the terrain
  • Long for convenient load-bearing options over a long distance
  • Comfort is what you are looking for
  • Regularly join cross-country bike trips

Key Specs

  • Frame: Kona Cromoly Butted Steel
  • Brakes: TRP HDC711C Mechanical/Hydraulic; TRP TR160mm Rotor
  • Shifter: Shimano Tiagra
  • Tires: 700x40c Schwalbe Marathon Mondial
  • Fork: Kona Project Two Cromoly Disc Touring

  • Derailleurs: Shimano GRX 400

It features an urban style stainless steel frame to withstand the hurdles on the road. Again, it’s equipped with the Shimano derailleur and Ashtabula chainring and crank for smooth speed change, however, these parts may not come with reputable brand tags, they actually provide solid performance.

The handlebar felt grippy enough because of its advance Cinelli Cork grips manufactured by Ergon. The bar ends are amazingly ergonomic allowing different gripping options.

Best Touring Bikes [A Comprehensive Buying Guide]

Best Touring Bikes Buying Guide

Touring bicycles usually come with designs for holding loads, ensuring that you enjoy optimum comfort when riding. Since they come in different arrangements, you need to know their basic features and types before buying.

1. Types

Your purpose of shopping will determine which bike type is perfect for you. So, let’s find out which group might suit your needs the most.

  • Classic touring bikes – These are like the traditional bikes with steel frames, full fenders, high-speed gears, and wider rims. The rider often sits in an upright position but tilts slightly towards the handlebars making it ideal for street rides during cycling vacations.
  • Adventure bikes – These are better than classic touring bikes even though they’re similar by tires, frame, and braking system. Yet, adventure bikes have stable geometry with drop handlebars that allow for a less-stressful ride. They’re very versatile and suitable for touring, commuting, and road rides. If you are planning to spend quality time with your family members on a holiday, get one of these bikes. These are also ideal for backroads trips in places like Burgundy.
  • Flat-bar hybrid bikes – These types are more common in European roads and features strong alloy frames, tires, and modern v-brakes for a powerful stop. Often, they’re loaded with pannier racks and mudguards to enhance its loading capacity. You don’t expect them to pulloff much on rough roads but you’ll enjoy a smoother ride on good roads and bike pavements.
  • E-bikes – There is no possibility of listing touring bike types without mentioning an e-bike or electric bike. Recently, they’ve become more popular among riders because of their speed and effortless riding. They have the same build as most today’s high-end hybrid bikes and mountain bikes (MTB) but are more expensive and need regular charging of the battery.
  • Expedition touring bikes – These are the most rugged touring bike types because of their capacity to carry heavy-duty loads. They’re more efficient for riding through rough terrains without compromising on comfort. They feature huge steel frames and suspension forks. The good thing about them is the ease of availability of the parts making it easier to maintain. These are the bikes you choose for touring around the world.

2. Frame

Although most touring bicycles have similar handlebar design like road bikes, they’re very different in the aspect of geometry, wheelbase, and points for attachments. They have longer chainstay to accommodate panniers and also to prevent it from interfering with the rider’s feet.

Besides, the frame must be tough enough to withstand long rides under load. The mainframe material for touring bicycles includes aluminum, steel, and titanium. Titanium frames are the lightest yet the toughest of them all.

The frame size is crucial when fitting the bike according to the rider’s height. Tall riders must choose a bike with higher frame that has longer distance between the seat and handlebar.

3. Wheels

Touring bikes feature high-quality wheels for handling heavy loads and difficult terrains. In most cases, these wheels have double rims with 36 or 48 spokes of 3 or 4 crosses. They use either 26-inch or 700c wheel size. However, many riders prefer the 26-inch wheel size because of their strength, durability, and availability. The wheels for fat tires will differ from the ones used for regular tires.

4. Brake

While racing bikes use caliper brakes, touring bicycles function with linear-pull brakes. It’s not advisable to use caliper brakes on touring bikes because of their poor performance when the bike is heavily loaded. Some feature disc brakes since they provide better stopping under slippery roads and muddy terrain.

While it might reduce wear of the rims, disc brakes are complicated and difficult to repair in remote locations. Also, they’re heavier than cantilever brakes putting more weight on the spokes which reduce the wheel’s lifespan. So, the best touring bikes might be strong and rugged but should have limited speed because of the load and braking efficiency.

5. Gear

Derailleur gears with wide ratios are more common with touring bikes because of their reliability when cruising steep hills. The gearing system has three chainrings like most mountain bikes while road bicycles often have two. The use of 11-34 tooth cassettes with a triple chainring setup is gaining popularity since they likely offer a gear range of 18-104 inches.

The most available gearing system is the 5, 7, 8, 11, and 14-speed ratios since their reliable and easier to maintain. Single speed touring bikes are widely popular in Asia. However, multiple gear system is always relevant in such touring bikes unless you are talking about party bikes or pedal pubs.

6. Trailers

Many riders prefer trailers to panniers because they’re easier to use and also attachable to bikes with no racks. Yet, trailers with double wheels aren’t good for rugged terrains since it reduces the bike’s speed and maneuverability making single wheel trailers the better alternative.

7. Luggage and Lights

Since touring bikes are designed for heavy-duty loads and distance travel, they’re equipped with racks, panniers, and lights. You can even carry wine bottles with your bike. What Is a Touring Bike Exactly?

What is a Touring Bikes

Touring bicycles have special features like a longer wheelbase and flexible frame for smooth conveying of loads. They have various types for sports, road, recumbent, among others, depending on the configuration.

Touring bikes are different from road bikes. The sport-touring or racing bicycles have lightweight frames, lighter wheels, and narrow tires. They’re faster and easier to maneuver or handle than regular road bikes. Since it’s having a lighter frame, it can only convey the rider and a few loads.

Road touring bikes have sturdy body frames with fenders, mounting points, and racks for stable and easy handling. Also, road touring bikes feature the 700c or 26-inch wheels, wide rims and tires making it ideal road and off-road rides.

Recumbent bicycles allow you to sit in a reclining position with the legs outstretched. The loads mount under the sit or on the racks to enhance its carrying capacity.

Tandem bicycles are designed for two-person riding. It may not accommodate many loads but you’ll manage it better with trailers. You might consider folding your bike when traveling by airplane or train. In this case, a foldable bike is what you need since it allows you to collapse its size so it can fit in a box or bag.

Touring Bike Care & Maintenance Tips

Knowing how to maintain your bike can save you from unnecessary spending on repairs and prolong the life of your bike. Even the greatest riders in the world take care of their bikes and bike accessories. So, pay attention to the following tips.

Cleaning – It’s good to wipe dirt off your bike on a regular basis. Start by dipping a rag into a soap solution and then clean the grease or dirt from the frame and other parts. This will enhance the bike’s looks and allow you to see the components clearly when inspecting for possible faults.

Inspection – You should look at the moving parts and their components since they wear out easily. These parts include the wheel and tires, cable housing, drivetrain, and brakes.

  • Wheel and tires – Check the wheels to see if they’re rolling smoothly and also inspect the spokes for firmness. Now, look at the tires for cuts and frays on the walls. If you find any fault in these parts, they should be repaired or replaced immediately.
  • Cable housing – It’s important to look up for frayed parts on the cable housing and try to feel its response by pulling the twist levers. If you feel much friction when you’re engaging the levers, change the cables.
  • Drivetrain – By looking at your drivetrain, you’ll know if any of the components are in shape. These parts are chain, cassette, derailleur, and crankset. Applying a few chain maintenance tricks will tell you if it’s in order. Perhaps, you might want to replace the entire components so they can wear out uniformly.
  • Brakes – Surprisingly, the brake is often easier to maintain than the drivetrain. Here, you’ll consider the pad and the spring’s tension. If you notice much wear in the brake pads, then it needs a replacement. If you’re not satisfied with the spring tension even when using a new cable, it’s better to replace it.

Lubrication – Once you’re done with the cleaning and inspection processes, it’s time to add some lube to the moving parts. You may have to check with the bike’s manufacturer to know which lube to use. Lube is used for protecting moving parts of your bike from wear caused by friction.

James Jordan

As a kid I inherited the love for mountain bikes from my father who used to ride for weeks through the Colorado trail in the city of Denver. He had his gang, and I followed pretty much the same track.

Later on, my interest in biking grew more after joining the Enduro race back in 2013. My buddies and I also participated in the Downhill racing for the third consecutive year, and it’s been an amazing experience.
