Kent Bike Reviews 2024: Are Kent Bikes Worth the Money?

Kent Bike Reviews

Is Kent a good bike brand?

Kent does not belong to the “top bike brands” category like Trek, Cannondale, Santa Cruz, or GT Bicycles. You can consider Kent a “Walmart brand” that sells more affordable mid-to low-quality bikes that still serve a large customer base in the USA.

Not everybody needs to spend over $2k on premium bikes for grocery shopping or some casual rides around the town. That’s when mid-tier brands like Kent shine with their budget-friendly offerings.

In our Kent bike reviews, we’ll discuss this brand and their product lineup, reasons you might consider one of the models, where you can get one, and our experience with some of their bikes.

A Little About Kent International

About Kent International

The story of Kent International started with Abraham Kamler, a polish immigrant who came to the USA and started a tiny repair shop at New York City. He opened his shop in 1909 and thanks to his dedication and skills, quickly gained popularity among the local customers.

Abraham had 2 sons. After serving the community for around 40 years, he decided to register his own company. He named the company Philkam Cycle (combining initials of his son’s names; Phil and Kam) in 1947 and started mass producing affordable bikes.

Despite the contemporary adversity in bike business, Abraham managed to hold their companies position and his son, Arnold Kamler expanded the business with a little help from the local govt. Alongside changing the company name into Kent International (1958), he also moved his new business to its current location, Parsippany, New Jersey (1979).

Even today, after serving the community for over 100 years, the company is still run by the same family and owns several bike brands including Shogun, Takara, Capstone, Giordano, and Geness.

Not only Kent managed to tackle the economic adversities of that time, but it also evolved and expanded to reach today’s position, where Kent bikes have become synonymous with convenience and affordability. Today, they cater to the demands of most of the big-box retailers (like Walmart) in the country.

Reasons Kent Bikes May Be a Good Fit for You

Reasons Kent Bikes May Be a Good Fit for You

Affordability

The primary target for Kent International was to hit the lower end of the bike market. They focused on convenience and provided decent quality bikes to their customers.

The most noticeable advantage of Kent bike models is their price. With the lowest model costing around $100, they are among the cheapest bikes you can find on the market. Not only that, but these bikes are also durable and reliable enough for all types of riding conditions.

Kid bikes from Kent are usually below $100 whereas an adult bike will cost you $150-200 on average. However, there are also some high-end models available pricing around $300-900.

Convenience

Not only Kent bikes are relatively cheaper than other bike models, but they also provide convenience. From quick assembly to replaceable parts and accessories, this brand has taken all the necessary steps to ensure that riders can get maximum value out of their Kent bike.

These bikes come with plenty of standard features such as adjustable handlebars and seats, alloy rims, double-walled rims for added durability, suspension forks on front wheels etc. Most importantly, the parts used in these bikes are easy to find and replace if you ever run into any problems while using them.

In addition to that, most of their bikes have a lightweight frame which makes it easier for you to carry around your bike or move it from one place to another. However, if your primary target is some heavy riding, Kent bikes are not your things!

Versatility

Another reason Kent bikes are still relevant today is their superior versatility. No matter what types of biking you’re into, Kent has a model for that. Every type of Kent bike has some activity-specific features to offer.

For example, commuting bikes are equipped with lightweight frames and comfy seats. Offread bikes, on the other hand, offer durable frames, full suspension, and knobby tires.

You can even customize your ride according to your specific needs. Whether you want to cruise around the town, commute on a regular basis, deal with city traffic, or take your adventure off-road, Kent bikes can be a great starting point.

However, it would probably be a better idea to switch into more advanced bike models if you want more heavy-duty performance out of your bike.

Repair and Maintenance

With Kent bikes and accessories available on nearly every Walmart store, it’s really easy and convenient to repair and upgrade your bike whenever you need. The bikes are easy to assemble and maintain.

The bikes are also built with simplicity in mind, meaning you’ll have to deal with less complicated stuff. Kent bikes also come with easy to follow manuals and step-by-step instructions so you can take care of basic repair and maintenance tasks, even if you’re not that much familiar with it.

Both Kent bikes and their parts/accessories are widely available throughout the USA. Aside from big chain shops, many online retailers and bike shops also carry parts. So repairing and maintaining Kent bikes are really straightforward.

Reasons Kent May Not Be Your Choice

Low Tier Bikes

The affordability of Kent bikes also comes with a price – performance. If you need heavy-duty performance, day-long bike rides, and super durable bikes, Kent won’t do you much good. These bikes are designed for occasional riding, so expecting professional quality from these bikes would be a little far-fetched!

Kent bikes are built around affordability, so you can get a bike even for less then $100. Instead of high-performance, Kent provides high convenience. So, if you’re out there searching for a pro grade bike that can take one even the roughest of terrains, you should probably look elsewhere.

Durability

Durability is another issue you might need to think about. As Kent bikes prioritize cost-effectiveness, they often use lower-end parts and accessories to keep the price down. This affects the durability of these bikes. These bikes are considered good entry-level bikes for beginners.

However, as you progress and take on more difficult challenges, it would be a wiser choice to invest in some professional grade bike that can keep up with your progress.

While Kent bikes may be a good choice for those just starting out and looking for an affordable way to get into cycling, if you are serious about the sport and plan to take on more advanced challenges, it may be worth considering investing in a higher-end bike.

Product Lineup

Kent has a huge bike collection for all ages and styles, including kid’s bikes, BMX freestyle bike, cruiser/comfort bikes, hybrid/trekking bike, mountain bike, road/fixie bikes, tricycles, tandem bikes, folding bikes, recumbent, and electric bikes. Let’s have a closer look at some of the most widely used Kent bikes across the country.

Mountain Bikes

Kent has a range of mountain bikes available in their arsenal. However, these bikes aren’t for professional use. They are more like entry level MTBs designed to introduce the rider into the world of MTB. These bikes are perfect for beginners and occasional riders.

Kent offers both full suspension and hardtail bikes. Kent MTBs feature wide tires, rugged frames, disk brakes, and decent quality components that can take on light trails easily. The bikes are also available in a range of sizes to accommodate riders of different heights and body types.

Overall, the Kent MTB range was designed to provide an affordable option for those looking to get into mountain biking. While the bikes may not have been as high-end or durable as some of the more expensive models on the market, they offered a solid entry-level option for riders looking to explore off-road trails and improve their skills.

BMX Bikes

Kent BMX bikes are a popular choice among beginner and intermediate riders looking for an affordable and fun way to get into BMX riding. These bikes feature sturdy steel frames, lightweight alloy rims, and responsive brakes, making them ideal for performing tricks and jumps on the street or at the skatepark.

However, we also have noticed that the build quality of these bikes is not as high as more expensive models, and they may require more frequent maintenance and repairs. Additionally, some of our test riders found the seat and pedals on Kent BMX bikes to be uncomfortable or poorly designed.

Overall, if you are a beginner/intermediate level rider looking for an affordable and fun way to get into BMX riding, Kent BMX bikes may be a good choice for you. However, if you are more experienced or plan to use your bike for more advanced tricks and competitions, you may want to consider investing in a higher-end model that can offer better support and performance.

Fat Bikes

Kent Fat bikes are designed for riders who want to explore rough terrain, such as snow, sand, or mud. These bikes feature oversized tires that provide excellent traction and stability, allowing riders to tackle difficult terrain with ease. They also typically have wide handlebars and low gearing, which helps to provide a comfortable and efficient riding position.

One of the key advantages of Kent Fat bikes is their versatility. These bikes can be used in a wide range of environments, from snowy trails to sandy beaches, making them a great choice for riders who want to explore new terrain and challenge themselves.

In terms of build quality, Kent Fat bikes are generally well-made and durable, with sturdy frames and components that can withstand the rigors of off-road cycling. These bikes offer excellent traction, stability, and versatility, and are well-suited for riders who want to challenge themselves and push their limits.

However, we have also noted that the weight of the oversized tires can make these bikes feel sluggish and heavy, especially on flat or smooth terrain. Additionally, the wide tires may require more effort to pedal, which can be tiring for some riders.

Overall, if you are a rider who wants to explore off-road terrain and challenging environments, a Kent Fat bike may be a good choice for you. However, if you are looking for a bike that is optimized for speed and efficiency on smooth terrain, you may want to consider a different type of bike.

Tandem Bikes

Kent Tandem Bikes are a great option for couples or families who want to ride together and enjoy the outdoors. These bikes are designed to accommodate two riders, with one rider in front and one in the back, and feature comfortable saddles, responsive brakes, and a sturdy frame that can support the weight of two riders.

One of the standout features of Kent Tandem Bikes is their affordability, with models starting at a very reasonable price point. This makes them an attractive option for riders who want to enjoy tandem biking without investing too much money upfront.

Despite their low cost, Kent Tandem Bikes offer good performance and handling on the road or on light trails. They are easy to control and maneuver, with a responsive feel that allows riders to enjoy the ride together.

However, we’ve also noted that the build quality of these bikes is not as high as more expensive models, and they may require more frequent maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the seating position can be uncomfortable for extended rides, and the pedals may be too close together for some riders.

Joshua Fernand

I’m a 38-year-old father of two and an avid adventurer with a history of road bike racing in the mountains. I’m also a member of the Mountain Top Cycling Club, Colorado. I took part in several cross country rides across the states with my cruiser bike.

Tell you what, each tour was over a thousand miles long and it wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t studied bike mechanics. Most of the fixes required during my travel had to be fixed by myself. Cruiser became my favorite category since then.
